CHURCHES - NAXOS ISLAND

The most famous church in Naxos is the Panagia Drosiani, one of the oldest Christian churches in Greece, dating back to the 6th century. With unique frescoes and distinctive architecture, Drosiani is a masterpiece of Byzantine art. Equally impressive is Panagia Protothronos in the village of Chalki, which has been operating continuously since the 9th century and hosts important hagiographies.

In the inland of Naxos, every visitor can discover many small chapels, such as Panagia Faneromeni near Apollonas and Panagia Myrtidiotissa in Agia Anna. The Monastery of Agios Ioannis Chrysostomos is also an important pilgrimage site, built in a privileged location with a wonderful view of the magnificent Chora of Naxos.

The churches of Naxos are not only religious monuments, but also points of cultural and architectural value. Every year, local festivals, such as those of the Virgin Mary on August 15, are unique opportunities for visitors to experience the deep connection of the Naxians to their faith and tradition, through music, dance and traditional dishes.
